Breast Cancer Awareness
Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that develops in the breast tissue, primarily affecting women but also occurring in men. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The disease typically originates in the milk-producing ducts or lobules, with growth often influenced by hormones like oestrogen and progesterone. Various factors contribute to the risk of developing breast cancer, including genetic mutations, family history, radiation exposure, and lifestyle choices.
Common symptoms include a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area, changes in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, redness or scaliness, and nipple discharge or inversion. Diagnosis is made through methods such as mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy. Treatment options vary depending on the cancer's stage, hormone receptor status, and individual circumstances, ranging from surgery and radiation therapy to chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
Breast cancer is staged from Stage 0 (non-invasive) to Stage IV (metastatic), with survival rates improving significantly with early detection. Regular screenings and self-examinations are essential for better prognosis. Ongoing research is focused on genetic testing, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and personalized medicine. Awareness campaigns play a critical role in promoting education, screening, and support for those affected by the disease.
